Abstract

[Objective]To investigate the characterization of the color particles’strength and prediction of color particle texture in sand-in-water multicolor coatings.[Methods]The viscoelastic modulus of the base paint of sand-in-water multicolor coatings in the linear viscoelastic region wasmeasured using a rotational rheometer to characterize the strength of the color particles. The influenceof hydrophobically modified cellulose ether on the strength of the color particles was studied, thereby establishing the relationship between the color particles’strength and texture.[Results]When the elastic modulus of the base paint was between 180 and 230 Pa and the viscous modulus was between 90and 130 Pa,the strength of the color particles was higher, resulting in a good texture and stone-like effect after spraying.[Conclusion]The rheological characterization method established in this paper for sand-in-water multicolor coatings could quantitatively characterize the strength of the color particles and predict the texture, providing a theoretical basis for the development of related productsfor waterborne multicolor coatings.
