Abstract

[Objective] To reduce the reliance of traditional antifouling coatings on toxic antifouling agents.[Methods] Camptothecin-based methacryloyl carbamate monomer(CM) was synthesized by the reaction of isocyanatoethyl methacrylate with camptothecin, and it was subsequently copolymerized with methyl methacrylate, butyl acrylate, hexafluorobutyl methacrylate,2-methoxyethylacrylate and acryloyloxy triisopropylsilane by free radical copolymerization to prepare camptothecin-based acrylic silane ester resin(CAUR).[Results]For coating based on the resin with 1% CM content(CAUR-1), the inhibition adhesion rates against Phaeodactylum tricornutum and Chlorella vulgaris after 24-hour immersion in algal solutions were 76. 5% and 79. 3%,respectively. No significant algalconcentration difference was observed between the blank control group and CAUR coatings after 9-dayimmersion in Chlorella vulgaris solution, indicating that CAUR resin had excellent anti-algalperformance without toxic effects on algae. Antifouling coatings formulated with CAUR-1 demonstratedfavorable antifouling properties after 30-day immersion tests in Xiamen coastal waters.[Conclusion] The graft of natural antifouling agent camptothecin onto the side chains of methacrylic silane ester resincould enhance the antifouling performance of the base resin and reduce the dosage of toxic antifoulingagents.
