Synthesis of Epoxy Tung Oil-based Triglycidyl Esters and Study on Its Cured Film Properties

Abstract

[Objective]To address the limitation of insufficient mechanical strength in tung oil-based cured films,a tung oil-based epoxy resin with high epoxy content was developed and a high-performance cured film was constructed.[Method] Tung oil-based triglycidyl ester was preparedusing tung oil acid as the raw material to react with maleic anhydride and epichlorohydrin. The doublebonds were epoxidized to obtain epoxy tung oil-based triglycidyl esters(ETME') with high epoxy content,which was then thermally cured with bio-phenolic tannic acid to construct tung oil-based epoxy cured film.[Results] ETME' with epoxy equivalent of 188. 75 g/mol was successfullysynthesized. When the molar ratio of phenolic hydroxyl in tannic acid to epoxy groups in ETME' was 2. 5∶1,the gelation rate of the ETME'-based cured film could reach 97%,the tensile strength exceeded 10 MPa,the pencil hardness was 4H,as well as the cured film possessed excellent thermal stability and good adhesion.[Conclusion] An effective construction strategy for the development of high-performance tung oil-based epoxy cured films by the synergistic effect of bio-phenolic curing agentsand tung oil-based epoxy resins with high epoxy content was proposed.
