Preparation and characterization of UV-curable polyurethane coating with self-healing and self-matting properties

Abstract

A biphenyl diol containing a Diels-Alder(DA)structure was synthesized byreacting biphenyl bismaleimide with furfuryl alcohol. Subsequently, a UV-curable selfrepairing polyurethane resin was prepared by using this diol,isophorone diisocyanate,poly(tetrahydrofuran),and hydroxyethyl acrylate. The structure of resin was characterized by using FT-IR and 1H NMR. The double-bond conversion rate during the UV-curable process of theresin was determined via FT-IR analysis. The impact of the DA diol dosage on the coatingproperties was investigated. The results indicated that an increase in DA content led to morepronounced microphase separation in the coating,enhancing the self-matting effect and the self-healing properties of the coating. After healed,the surface roughness of the coatingincreased,accompanied by a decrease in gloss,The gloss of the coating was stable after 3 to 4 repairs. Moreover,an increase in DA content resulted in a higher glass transition temperaturefor the cured material,with the appearance of two distinct glass transition temperatures. Whenthe material amount ratio of polytetrahydrofuran and DA diol was 0. 75∶1. 25,the coatingexhibited excellent self-matte performance and self-repairing properties. When subjected todamage at 150 ℃,the coating was able to repair scratches effectively,with the gloss decreasingfrom the initial 18. 6 to 9. 8. After undergoing 3 to 4 rounds of repair,the gloss stabilizes at around 4. 5.
