Synthesis and properties of carbazole-based oxime ester photoinitiator with low migration

Abstract

In order to reduce the migration of photoinitiators in UV-curable coating,two polymerizable oxime ester photoinitiators with double bond end capping were synthesized usingcarbazole as the chromophore. The UV absorption,steady-state photolysis and migration were studied by UV-visible spectroscopy,the decarboxylation and photopolymerization were characterized by Fourier Transformed Infrared(FT-IR), and the thermal stability was determined by Thermo-Gravimetric Analysis(TGA). The results showed that the maximum absorption wavelength ofthese photoinitiators was at 338 nm,with a tail absorption extending to 380 nm. Under low-intensity 365 nm LED irradiation(1 mW/cm2),the carbazole-based oxime esters could undergo decarboxylation reaction,and the released active free radicals could effectively initiatepolymerization of acrylate monomers and thiol acrylate systems. Migration tests indicated that bothpolymerizable carbazole-based oxime esters exhibit low migration in photo-cured coatings.
