Abstract

Addressing the low painting efficiency of waterborne coatings, the PVAc-based core/shell latex functionalized with double bound groups was firstly fabricated bygrafting dipentene on shell surface of the latex. Then, the UV-curable composite emulsion wasprepared through adding pre-emulsified polyfunctional monomer(TMPTA)at the late stage of latex formation, aiming to accelerate the film-forming of the latex emulsion. The stability of its lotion, light curing properties, mechanical properties and film properties were studied. Theprepared PVAc-based core-shell latex can achieve UV-curing due to the grafting of activegroup combining with the small latex size within the UV wavelength range. By adjusting theamount of polyfunctional monomer, the film-forming of PVAc-based composite emulsion canbe significantly accelerated. Appling to wood coatings,UV curing can be achieved in as little as 20 seconds. At the same time, the property of composite emulsion film can be adjusted. When the double-bond ratio is 3∶1,the best mechanical properties of light-cured latex filmwere obtained with the tensile strength of 0. 91 MPa,elongation at break of 1. 29% and elastic modulus of 70. 54 MPa. In addition, the hardness, adhesion force, gloss and roughness of the wood coating film are 4H,0,23.7 and 1.15μm,respectively. The prepared PVAc-basedcomposite emulsion will have broad application prospects in waterborne wood coatings.
