Abstract

In order to explore the effect of application of natural product-based antifouling coatings on aquaculture facilities,we prepared the marine antifouling coatings using the natural product camptothecin(CPT)as antifoulant, tested their toxicity to the aquatic organism Artemia salina and applied them to the aquaculture nets in the sea. The resultsshowed that the antifouling coatings containing CPT(5%-20%)had no significant toxicity to A. salina. They showed good antifouling performance on the net cages which were used forculturing the pearl oyster Pinctada fucata, with the antifouling efficiency lasting for 120 days. The coating containing CPT(5%)had no significant effect on the growth and survival of P. fucata. Furthermore,it was found that the coating containing CPT(1%)and tralopyril(5%) exhibited antifouling efficiency over a period of 180 days and had no significant impact on thegrowth and survival of the yellowfin seabream Acanthopagrus latus. This study revealed theapplication potential of the natural product CPT in biofouling control for aquaculture facilities.
