Dispersion Characterization and Dispersion Performance of Mica in UV-curable Coatings System

Abstract

In order to study the influence of hyperdispersants on the dispersion of mica in UV-curable coatings system,mica was modified by four hyperdispersants including BYK-111,BYK-168,BYK-2008,BYK-2025. The dispersion of the modified mica fillers in UV-
curable coatings was investigated by sedimentation method,ultra-depth of field microscope,scanning electron microscope(SEM)and viscosity method. The corrosion resistance of UV-curable mica coating was tested by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS)and neutral salt spray test. The results showed that the viscosity method and SEM could reflect the dispersion performance of mica in the UV-curable coatings. Among the four hyperdispersants,the polyurethane type hyperdispersant BYK-168 had the best performance for improving the mica dispersion in UV-curable coatings,and the constructed UV-curable coating had the best corrosion resistance. After soaking in 3. 5% NaCl solution for 1 200 h,the electrochemical impedance of the coating remained at about 109 Ω·cm2,which decreased less than one order of magnitude in the whole soaking process. The coating remained intact without any corrosionafter 1 000 h of salt spray.
