Among various anti-corrosion methods，the sol-gel method is a simple surface coating technology which is easy to operate，environmentally friendly，and low in cost，and has been widely used for corrosion protection of many metal materials. This paper described theglobal applicant's patent applications for sol-gel corrosion protective coatings，analyzed the technical efficacy distribution of patent applications，and summarized its technologies in inorganic systems，organic-inorganic hybrid systems，compound resins and functional additives. The future development trend in this field was forecasted.
