Synthesis and Properties of Ethynyl Functionalized Emulsion

Abstract

The acetylene functionalized monomer 1-etynylcyclohexylmethacrylate(ECMA) was used to synthesis ethynyl functionalized emulsion polymers with BA and MMA. And their structures were characterized by FT-IR, 1H NMR,GPC,etc. The emulsion formed a crosslinked latex film via thiol-yne click reaction. The changes of mechanical properties and heat resistance of the film before and after photocrosslinking were measured to evaluate the possibility of being used as the binder of waterborne coatings. The results showed that the retention percentage of
etynylwashigherthan 95% on ECMA during polymerization. The size of emulsion was lower than 50 nm and the distribution was even. The temperature at 5% weight loss of the crosslinked film was 60 ℃ higher than uncrosslinked film,indicating the significantly improved thermal stability. After cross-linking,the tensile strength of latex film increased,the elongation at break decreased,and the tensile strength increased by 3 times with the increase of ECMA content. In conclusion,the ethynyl functionalization provided a new and convenient way for crosslinking modification,and also provided a new method for the preparation of waterborne coatings.
