Waterborne polyurethanes (WPUs) are prepared with poly (1,4-butanediol adipate)diol (PBA,Mn=2 000) as soft segments and hydroquinone dihydroxyethyl ether (HQEE) as chain extender. The effect of the HQEE contents on the properties of waterborne polyurethanes are investigated. The morphology of the emulsion is characterized by laser scattering particle size analyzer. The structure of the films is characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The thermal and mechanical properties of the films are studied by the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA)and electronic tensile testing. The results show that the content of HQEE results in the decrease of crystallinity of WPUs. Moreover, the average particle size of the emulsion first increases and then decreases, and the water resistance of the film decreases, and the heat resistance of the film increases and the tensile strength of the film also increases first and then decreases. The results indicate that the tensile strength of the film reaches up to a maximum value of 29.9 MPa when the HQEE content is 6.93%.
