The anti-corrosive coating is an effective measure to protect the metal products from corrosion. Due to environmental factors or the characteristics of the coating, microcracks inevitably appear during their application, and some cracks can not be seen by the naked eye. When the microcracks are exposed to the atmosphere,they can spread and expand to make the coating to peel off the substrate and reduce the protective life of the coating. Therefore, self-healing smart coatings have attracted attention in academia and industry. In this paper, the importance, development status, types of coatings and future development trend of self-healing coatings for metals are described. The self-healing mechanism of microcapsule self-healing coatings, polymer self-healing coatings and self-healing coatings loaded corrosion inhibitors are discussed. It also points out that future development of self-healing coatings.
